CBR DEVELOPMENT CENTER
We try as much as possible to help the disabled in their homes through community based rehabilitation and but after the economic crisis the requests from parents are increasing and also requests for being received in our sociohomes for the disabled. especially in the poor regions and outside Java and in the slump areas.
More and more parents with severely disabled children cannot longer cope with the economic and social difficulties of life at this moment. The government is not yet able to provide the necessary services. So the community has to take responsibility for the disabled in their middle . CBR is expanding
In Jakarta community baseed rehabilitation developed in the slumps surrounding the harbor in Cilincing and Lumba-Lumba. Many of the people have no work and others try to get something to eat by catching or cleaning mussels. The huts are often so small and dirty that it is nearly impossible to take care of a disabled child there. A number of disabled come to our center a few times every week and are visitedn once a week by CBR workers from the community.Community Rehabilitation Centers developed all over Indonesia and are now working together in the ACBRI (Association CBR Indonesia) Visit their homepage for more information http://acbri.org

In the end of the year 2004 Community Based Rehabilitation is rehabilitating directly 2400 disabled in 20 CBR centers in Java, Kalimantan, Flores, Sumba,Timor and Tanimbar. Many more were helped by referral to existing services in the community.y

In the field of CBR packages for caregivers fieldworkers and parents materials and training packages were developed:

We have translated an edited the book "Disabled Village Children " of David Werner. This book is a guide for community health workers ,rehabilitation workers ,and families. It is considered by WHO as one of the best books about rehabilitation in rural areas. It is based on the results of the Projimo project one of the most successful CBR projects.
Mr. Werner and the Hesperian Foundation agreed that we could translate it in Indonesian
without commercial profit , special for CBR in rural minus areas. .

We have up till now edited the whole book and moreover we made 10 packages for parents and fieldsworkers : one about
feeding, dressing, bathing and toilet training for disabled children,
and in the field of Physiotherapy one about contractures and one about Cerebral Palsy.
